Greek And Roman Deities On Coins-27

Throughout history, water has been essential for sustaining life. In many cultures, rivers have been seen as important sources of water for drinking, washing, and irrigation, but they also pose a flooding risk. As a result, rivers have often been personified and worshipped as deities. In ancient Greek religion, rivers were very important and appeared in various forms of art, including coins. One notable river god is Borysthenes, linked to the river now known as the Dnieper River in modern-day Ukraine. This river god has been shown on coins since the 4th century BCE.
The coin displayed here dates from 300 BCE to 290 BCE and is a Bronze Coin from Olbia, an ancient Greek city in Ukraine. Weighing 10.43 grams, the obverse features a bearded and horned head of Borysthenes facing left. The reverse shows a bow in a case and an axe, with Greek inscriptions that read ‘OLBIO,’ representing Olbia, along with the letters Phi and Iota.
It is interesting to note how cultures gender rivers differently. In Greek tradition, rivers are mostly considered masculine, with examples like Achelous, Alpheus, Peneus, and Evros. In contrast, Indian culture often views most of its rivers as feminine, with names like Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, and Tapi.
